History repeats itself: Meghan Markle's revenge dress

Amid rumors of marital trouble and claims from Prince Harry's inner circle that he 'needs space from her,' Meghan Markle stepped out in a dress that sent a clear message; 'This dress is Meghan’s version of Diana’s revenge dress,' Harry, you can’t say we didn’t warn you

In recent weeks, Meghan Markle has once again made headlines – after a very brief break of about two or three days– this time under less-than-flattering circumstances. First, her former employees spoke out, describing her as a difficult and unpleasant person to work with. “Everyone’s afraid of Meghan,” a source close to the royal couple told The Hollywood Reporter.
Markle, for her part, has not responded to the harsh accusations, but just days later, it was reported that Prince Harry spent his birthday night alone. “Harry is frustrated,” insiders said. “He wants to fix his public image, and Meghan isn’t part of that. He needs some space from her.”

Despite the rumors, the Duchess of Sussex didn’t stay out of the spotlight – in fact, quite the opposite. She attended a glamorous gala for a children’s hospital in Los Angeles wearing a bold, revealing red dress, one that likely made Buckingham Palace officials sweat as they thumbed through royal protocol to count how many rules she broke.
“Meghan idolized Diana growing up, so it’s not surprising that when it came time for her to reinvent herself she seemingly turned to her late mother-in-law’s playbook, choosing a dress that spoke for itself,” said royal expert Alison Bushoff. She referred to Princess Diana’s iconic “revenge dress,” the black gown Diana wore in June 1994 after Prince Charles admitted to having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

Markle’s dress, aside from its striking red hue, featured a thigh-high slit, a plunging neckline, and exposed shoulders. It was designed by Carolina Herrera, and this wasn’t the first time Meghan wore it. In November 2021, she attended the Salute to Freedom gala alongside her husband, who held her hand tightly, wearing the same gown. Since then, the dress has been altered significantly, signaling Meghan’s rebranding, away from the royal family.
“You could say Meghan’s red dress is her version of Diana’s revenge dress,” a source said. “Just as Diana’s black dress symbolized a reclaimed sense of power after heartbreak, Meghan’s red dress can be seen as a step forward, taking control of the narrative amid the rumors about her marriage and personal life.”

Fashion stylist Meghan Watkins also weighed in on the dress, noting that “Meghan’s choice of such bold colors signifies a new sense of freedom and self-expression through her style – compared to her previous reluctance to stand out too much alongside other royals. This aligns perfectly with recent reports that Meghan is carving out her own path and focusing on personal projects.”
It’s worth mentioning that, at the end of September, Harry flew solo to London, continuing on to Africa without his wife. Meanwhile, Meghan seems to be fueling rumors of a rift by attending events and premieres alone, dressed to impress. However, there’s no need to rush to conclusions about their relationship just yet. It’s not the first time rumors of trouble have surfaced, nor the first or tenth time the couple has appeared separately at events. Either way, we’ll keep following and updating – stay tuned!
