The Olivier Awards, presented annually by the Society of London Theatre to recognize excellence, announced nominees for 2023 on Tuesday with Israeli stars listed among the big names considered for this year's honor.
The Donmar Warehouse musical adapted from the Israeli film "The Band's Visit" was nominated six times in five different categories.
The musical's stars - Alon Aboutboul and Miri Mesika - nabbed the nods for Best Actor in A Musical and Best Actress in A Musical.
"It's very exciting, was surprised to receive the news and I don't know if someone from Israel has ever been nominated for the Olivier Awards," Mesika said. "The play is about Israel, and the Israeli actors are the nominees - it's crazy and hard to grasp," she said.
Other categories in which the play was nominated were Best Original Score or New Orchestrations, Mastercard Best New Musical, and Best Actor In A Supporting Role in A Musical. David Yazbek and Jamshied Sharifi wrote the play's score and were responsible for the orchestration as well.
"A Streetcar Named Desire," and "To Kill A Mockingbird," also received six nominations.
This year’s most-nominated production was "My Neighbour Totoro," the new stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s beloved 1988 animated film, with a total of nine nominations.
"Standing At The Sky’s Edge" received the most nominations for a musical with eight total.
