Madonna, though not Jewish, is well-known for her affinity for Judaism, Kabbalah studies and Israel, which has earned her the unofficial title of an "honorary Jew" over the years.
In 2013, Madonna and her ex-husband Guy Ritchie celebrated a bar mitzvah for their son, Rocco. This week, 11 years later, she returned to the synagogue – this time to celebrate a bat mitzvah for her twin daughters, Stella and Estere.
On Sunday, the pop icon shared a series of Instagram stories from the event, where the proud mother and her daughters are seen reading from the Torah. Also in attendance were her adopted son David and her Jewish manager Guy Oseary, both of whom participated in the celebration. Madonna did mix up some terminology, referring to the occasion as a "bar mitzvah" instead of a bat mitzvah.
In 2013, Madonna and Ritchie marked Rocco's bar mitzvah at the Kabbalah Center in New York. Her then-partner, dancer Brahim Zaibat, was also present. At the time, rumors circulated that Madonna was interested in purchasing an apartment in Israel, though nothing came of it.
Madonna has six children: two biological – her oldest daughter Lourdes, 28, from her relationship with Carlos Leon, and Rocco, 24, with Guy Ritchie – and four adopted: David,18, whom she adopted from Malawi in 2006 with Ritchie; Mercy, whom she adopted in 2009 after their divorce, and Stella and Estere, whom she adopted in 2017 when they were five years old.
It’s worth noting that David and Mercy never had a bar or bat mitzvah, making it unclear why the twins received this celebration. Regardless, congratulations to them on reaching this milestone!
