U.S. singer and actress Jennifer Lopez spoke at a Democratic Party rally in Las Vegas Friday overnight, standing alongside U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. The rally, which highlighted Latino voters, was held just days after the controversial rally by Republican candidate Donald Trump at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The Puerto Rican singer and actress took the opportunity to slam Trump, calling him "the biggest adversary I think America has internally ever had." She said the former president “consistently works to divide us. At Madison Square Garden, he reminded us who he really is and how he truly feels. That day, not only Puerto Ricans were insulted, but the entire Latino community in this country and every decent person.”
The singer urged the crowd to vote for Harris. " I am Puerto Rican, and yes, I was born here - and we are Americans. I am a mother, I am a sister, I am an actor and an entertainer, and I like Hollywood endings. I like when the good guy or, in this case, the good girl, wins. And with an understanding of our past and a faith in our future, I will be casting my ballot for Kamala Harris for president of the United States proudly."
Despite criticizing Trump, the singer clarified, " I'm a lover, you guys know that about me, I'm a lover, I am not a fighter. I am not here to trash anyone or bring them down. I know what that can feel like, and I wouldn't do it to my worst enemy, or even when facing the biggest adversary I think America has internally ever had. But over Kamala Harris's entire career, she has proven to us who she is.”
Lopez’s words come after Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a joke on Puerto Rico during Trump’s rally in New York, calling the country a “floating island of garbage,” drawing ire and criticism.
Trump, for his part, tried to distance himself from the controversy, telling reporters while driving a garbage truck that he didn’t even know who Hinchcliffe was. “I have no idea who he is. Somebody said there was a comedian that jokes about Puerto Rico or something and I have no idea who he is. Never saw him, never heard of him, and don’t want to hear of him,” Trump told reporters.
