A year after his severe injury in Gaza, Israeli singer and actor Idan Amedi on Sunday shared an inspiring video on Instagram from his early rehabilitation days, expressing gratitude to his recovery doctor, Dr. Irit Smilansky.
“A year after she took me in with shrapnel and fractures all over my body, I feel like the major physical ordeal is behind me,” Amedi wrote, thanking Dr. Smilansky. “There’s still work to be done and we’re not saying goodbye yet but this is an opportunity to thank you for being my doctor, friend, mother and confidante.”

Amedi reflected on the challenges of his recovery, adding, “From the moment I regained consciousness in intensive care to this day, I’ve been surrounded by the best family, largely because of the understanding that combat injuries aren’t just physical. It’s a grueling process — non-linear, full of twists, ups and downs.
“The understanding of a wounded soul — what drives it to get up every morning and choose life — is an inseparable part of the process,” he wrote. “Alongside endless professional knowledge, there was also the heart and sensitivity to assess my state at any given moment, knowing when to pause but also when not to hold me back from pushing forward in this painful and critical race.”
