Spanish actress Marisa Paredes dies at 78

Known as one of the biggest actress to ever come out of Spain, Paredes took part in over 120 films and series throughout her career that set off during the 1960s

Spanish actress Marisa Paredes has passed away at 78, the Spanish Academy of Cinema announced on Tuesday. The circumstances behind her death have not yet been disclosed.
Paredes was considered one of Spain's greatest film actresses, largely due to her roles in some of Pedro Almodovar's most iconic films. She starred in "High Heels" and "All About My Mother", among others.

Born in Madrid, Paredes began her career in 1960 with the Spanish crime film "091 Policia al habla", which made her a teenage star. A year later, she began performing on stage and quickly became one of Spain's busiest actresses.
Paredes gained international fame after collaborating with Almodovar, starting with her role in "Dark Habits" in 1983. She went on to star in his films "High Heels" (1991), "The Flower of My Secret" (1995), "All About My Mother" (1999), and "The Skin I Live In" (2011).

Paredes also appeared in "Life Is Beautiful" (1997), Roberto Benigni's Oscar-winning film and the horror drama "The Devil's Backbone" (2001) directed by Guillermo del Toro. In 2018, she received the Goya Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Spanish Academy of Cinema.

In the early 2000s, Paredes served as president of the academy for three years. She is survived by her daughter, actress Maria Isasi.
