Jewish actress Lisa Kudrow, known for her role as Phoebe Buffay on hit sitcom Friends, said seeing her female co-stars on the show made her believe she had to lose weight.
Kudrow, 59, starred opposite Jennifer Aniston, 53, who portrayed Rachel Green, and Courtney Cox, 58, who played Monica Geller on the NBC show that ran for 10 seasons.
The actress told the Podcrushed podcast that prior to appearing on the show, she believed she was "really skinny."
"It wasn't until Friends that I realized, 'Oh, I don't look like I thought I looked'... that's when it was like, 'Oh, I've got to actually lose weight?'"
Kudrow said at first she thought that Aniston and Cox looked slimmer than her due to their body hugging costumes, as opposed to Phoebe's character who wore more loose-fitted garments.
"But, it wasn't just about the tailoring… And I'm not trying to say I was overweight, either. I was not. I just had no idea the shape of my actual body."
The actress said she eventually made peace with her body shape, not working to aggressively lose weight, but rather trying to simply stay healthy.
Kudrow was born in Los Angeles, California and was raised in a middle-class Jewish family. She said she had a bat mitzvah ceremony. Her paternal great-grandmother was murdered in Ilya, Belarus during the Holocaust.
