The first fixture of the Champions League unfolded as expected, delivering the goods as usual, but the highlight for Israeli soccer enthusiasts was Gloukh's goal in his debut appearance, securing a huge 2-0 victory for the Austrian champions in a challenging away match against last season's quarter-finalists, Benfica Lisbon.
Gloukh delivered a strong performance, scoring his team's second goal in the 51st minute before being substituted in the 70th minute, and by scoring, he shattered Manor Solomon's record and became the youngest Israeli scorer in the Champions League at the age of 19 and five months.
"No words, great performance from the team, I feel like in a dream," the Israeli wrote on social media.
"Not here to take part," the official X account of FC Red Bull Salzburg said. "A historic night in Lisbon, what a performance from the boys. The youngest squad in Champions League history, and it's only getting started."
The Austrian media showered praise, stating, "Gloukh and Roko Simic celebrated against Benfica, a dream performance by Salzburg, and their young heroes did the job," as reported on the sport24 website.
Salzburg's next game will be in front of the home crowd against Basque club Real Sociedad, who played a 1-1 draw against last year's Champions League finalists Inter.
