A man was killed on Sunday and another injured after the two were attacked by a shark near Marsa Alam, on the shores of the Red Sea, according to Egypt's Ministry of Environment.
The ministry stated the attack occurred in deep waters, outside the designated swimming area, near the piers in northern Marsa Alam. The ministry added that, following the incident, beaches would be shut down for two days.
A similar incident occurred in June 2023, when a shark killed a Russian citizen in the coastal city of Hurghada, north of Marsa Alam.
Marsa Alam is a popular destination for divers from around the world, who come to observe the coral reefs and other marine creatures living in the area, including sharks. Egyptian authorities claim that divers are not at risk from sharks, but those swimming at the surface and venturing far from the shore may be more exposed to shark attacks.
