Social media sensation Peanut the squirrel euthanized on suspicion of rabies

In a surprising turn, Peanut the squirrel, who was seized and euthanized by New York authorities, sparks nationwide debate on government overreach; Amid the controversy, Trump was mistakenly credited with remarks highlighting the fervor surrounding this unusual incident

The United States found itself stirred up over a charming little creature's demise. Millions of Americans were left speechless when Peanut the squirrel, a social media sensation, was spirited away from his owner in a New York authorities' covert operation.
It later emerged that Peanut was euthanized to determine if he carried the rabies virus, with reports claiming that the usually cheerful and calm squirrel had allegedly nipped an investigator during the confiscation.
The incident sparked Republican outrage over government meddling in personal choices. Trump's party viewed the actions of New York authorities as genuine aggression and a breach of autonomy.

Mark Longo, a muscleman from upstate New York, had been Peanut's caregiver for over seven years after the squirrel's mother met an untimely end. Longo had turned Peanut into an internet darling, famous for flashing smiles at the camera and donning tiny hats.
Just days ago, authorities descended upon Longo's home following complaints about Peanut's living conditions. Alongside the squirrel, they also took away a raccoon named Fred, whom Longo had planned to rehabilitate and release back into the wild. "They raided the house as if I was a drug dealer," Longo lamented. "I just wanted to give him a good life."

After news of Peanut's demise spread, Longo shared a heartfelt tribute that garnered millions of views and shares: "Thank you for the wonderful years. Sorry I couldn’t protect you." He accused those who complained about Peanut's living conditions of cruelty. "The internet won," he wrote. "You took from me one of the most amazing animals because of your selfishness. There’s a special place in hell for you."

A bizarre Trump rumor

Following comments from Elon Musk on the affair, it was reported that Republican nominee Donald Trump weighed in, seizing the chance to critique what he termed New York State's "misplaced priorities." Trump argued that authorities were focusing on trivial matters like seizing pets instead of tackling public safety and immigration issues.
Mediaite further claimed that Trump said: "Peanut was innocent in every way, and if he had claimed to be an illegal immigrant from Mexico, they would have released him and given him a hotel room plus a $500 gift voucher for Buddy Squirrel snacks. Instead, he was taken from his family. Very sad, and a complete waste of resources! When we return to power, we'll ensure our country sets sensible priorities."

However, the outlet later clarified the quote was erroneous and that at no point did Trump comment on the matter.
New York authorities stated they acted in response to complaints about a rabies strain carried by the raccoon Fred in Longo's home. In fact, authorities were adhering to the state's prohibition on keeping wild animals as pets in residential areas due to concerns over potential disease outbreaks.
