Israel sees a 50% drop in serious illness from COVID

Health Ministry says there are currently 343 serious patients - down from 708 reported last month; 89% of seriously ill under the age of 60 are unvaccinated; new daily cases lowest since July 11; Bennett in consultations over new AY.4.2 variant

The number of seriously ill COVID patients on Wednesday was half that of just one month ago, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

    According to the ministry, of those seriously ill, 256 had not been vaccinated at all, 23 had not received the booster shot and 54 were fully vaccinated.
    In the under 60 age group suffering from serious complications, 89% were unvaccinated. Among them are 20 patients in their 30s.
    On Wednesday, 636 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed after 54,500 tests conducted, indicating a 1.21% positivity rate.
    This is the lowest number of daily confirmations since July 11.

    After two people died on Wednesday, the fatality rate since the start of the pandemic now stands on 8,029.

    The Health Ministry said he had been isolated and the risk of other infections as a result of his illness, remained low.
    The AY.4.2 is considered highly infectious and has recently been detected in several European countries and is believed to have fueled a resurgence of the virus in the UK, where it now makes up for over 10% of all cases.
