Israel looks to be edging toward 900 dead from coronavirus since the start of 2022, health officials said Sunday.
The Health Ministry said since the beginning of this year, 880 people died from COVID-related complications, 59 of them on a single day last week - the highest tally of single day fatalities since the start of the pandemic.
In January of last year, a record number of single-day deaths was reported, when 75 patients succumbed to the virus. On Wednesday, Israel crossed the 9,000 mark of coronavirus deaths.
In addition, since the onset of the pandemic one out of every 1,000 overall deaths in Israel was the result of the virus, and the a website, monitoring COVID statistics, ranks Israel 86th in the number of deaths per capita in the world. Topping the list are countries where four out of every 1,000 deaths are COVID related.
Jerusalem leads the country in COVID related mortality, with 1,100 dead. Tel Aviv saw 412 of its residents succumb to coronavirus.
Among those who have died since the start of the pandemic, more than half were over the age of 80.
Out of the 9138 total deaths from the virus, 8,302 were in the high-risk population of over 60s.
Meanwhile, the number of seriously ill patients suffering from COVID remained high on Sunday, according to the ministry. Health officials estimate the wave of morbidity is near its end as the R factor, indicating community spread, has dropped to 0.88.
The coronavirus cabinet decided last week to limit the Green Pass restrictions to high risk events only, which include large crowds, food and beverage being offered and cultural events that are not restricted to seating only.
The decision is due to come into effect on Monday.
