Many researchers refer to depression as "the most prevalent mental health threat among older adults," though it affects people of all ages. Treatment options for depression range from medication to psychosocial interventions and even electroconvulsive therapy in severe cases. However, antidepressants often come with side effects, leading scientists to explore alternative therapies, including diet.
Recent years have seen growing interest in the potential of nutrition to combat depression. Studies have focused on how diet influences the gut microbiome and identified foods and beverages that may directly or indirectly alleviate depressive symptoms.

The findings were clear: tea, particularly green tea, showed significant potential to reduce the risk of depression and alleviate its symptoms. Among the studies reviewed, 86% found a strong correlation between green tea consumption and a decreased likelihood of depression.
One study even revealed that tea drinkers had a 35% lower risk of developing depression. The researchers recommended consuming at least three cups of green tea daily, particularly for individuals prone to depressive symptoms.
To reap the benefits, the researchers suggest drinking at least three cups of green tea a day. This advice is especially pertinent for those at greater risk of experiencing depression.
