Hope for daughter's release keeps hostage's mother alive

Liora Argamani succumbs to her terminal illness days after her daughter is rescued from captivity; during the long months since her abduction by Hamas terrorists, Argamani grew weak but fought hard to bring Noa and all the other captives home

Liora Argamani's ultimate life goal was to see her daughter again and that kept her alive, doctors at the Soratzky Medical Center in Tel Aviv said. She died on Tuesday, less than one month since her Noa returned.
Liora had terminal brain cancer but fought for the release of her daughter and all of the hostages, as long as she could. Noa Argamani was abducted from the Nova music festival in the massacre on October 7, along with her partner Avinatan Or and was rescued by a special ops team last month after more than eight months in captivity. Or remains in Gaza and his condition is unknown.

"I've gotten to know the family since we began treating Liora in 2022. Noa would accompany her mother on her visits and was involved and informed in her condition and her treatments, " said Dr. Felix Bookstein head of neuro-oncology.
"Liora's condition began to deteriorate early in October. The last time Noa was here with her mom, was just days before the massacre," he said. "After her daughter was taken hostage, things were difficult for Liora who spoke often about her hope that she would be reunited with her soon. Her illness may have been affected by the situation," he said. "She found it harder to communicate and our conversations were shorter, but it was evident that her ultimate goal was to see her daughter again."

Professor Ido Wolf who is head of Oncology at the hospital agreed. "That hope certainly kept her alive," he said "I'm glad Noa was able to be with her mother in the final days. Success in oncology is not always measured by extending life and here we saw Noa back home and safe and able to be close to her mother and that was a win for us."
