Israel reports over 6,000 daily COVID cases for first time in 6 months

Health Ministry says the tally of seriously ill has also risen and is now the highest it has been since March, while infection rate nears worrying 5%; 80 patients passed away since the start of August

Israel on Tuesday reported over 6,000 new daily COVID-19 cases diagnosed the previous day. This is the first time in six months the single-day tally has surpassed 6,000 cases.

  • The Health Ministry said since midnight Monday, at least 6,275 people tested positive for coronavirus, the highest single-day tally since February 8.

    Medical officials conducted over 130,000 tests throughout the day, placing the contagion rate at 4.8%.
    The ministry said at least 394 patients are in severe condition, the highest the figure has been since March, of whom 64 are ventilated.
    At least 80 patients passed away since the start of this month, bringing the official death toll to 6,559.
    In the meantime, at least 573,713 people have so far been given the third vaccine shot.

    The ministry said so far, they have received less than 50 reports about side effects among those who received the booster jab. Among the symptoms that were reported were pain around the area where the shot was administered, fever and nausea.
    In addition, in the first nine days of August, 28,484 Israelis received their first vaccine jab - an average of more than 3,150 newly vaccinated a day.
    But, there are still over a million Israelis aged 12 and over who have not yet received their first vaccine dose.
