Dr. Darya Maoz, an author and anthropologist, had planned a quiet vacation in Oxford, England, and booked an Airbnb apartment two months ago, however, she received a surprising message from the property owner.
"Hello I'm sorry, I didn't realise you are coming from Israel. Could you please book a different house? I will give you a full refund," the owner wrote.
Maoz responded, "I can't, no place left at all. It is illegal to do so. I don't believe you are asking for that. Very insulted."
The owner replied. "I'm sorry, but I can not condone the war. I have my principals, I am a Muslim. I can not allow that."
"I was in shock. Who would believe I would receive such a message, canceling our reservation right before our trip, for such a racist and antisemitic reason," Maoz told Ynet.
"It’s absurd. Also, Oxford in July is packed with tourists. My attempts to find an alternative with similar standards on such short notice failed, especially in central areas. The only available options were in remote villages, and if I found anything, it was double the price."
Maoz contacted Airbnb support, who immediately responded, condemned the incident, and suspended the listing in accordance with the company’s policies. Additionally, last night, Airbnb representatives found Maoz a nearby alternative and agreed to cover the price difference.
Before her account was suspended, the property owner sent another message to Maoz, writing, "I apologize for my extreme reaction. This is a very sensitive situation for me, and it has affected me deeply, as I’m sure it has affected you and your family. I hope you have a peaceful stay here and feel welcome."
