Indian low-cost to let women sit apart from men
India's IndiGo airline said on Tuesday that as of August, it would allow women passengers to choose if they would rather not sit next to men on flights.
In a first-ever decision, women will be able to see who is seated next to them when they book their flights, with the gender of passengers identified by color, and decide if they would rather move to be seated next to other women.
Men would not be able to see the gender of passengers seated next to them on the airline's booking system and would only be able to know if the neighboring seat was occupied or not.
IndiGo said in a statement that the service is in its pilot stage before being extended to all flights. "IndiGo is proud to announce the launch of a new feature to provide a comfortable flight experience for women," the statement read.
"We are committed to providing an unparalleled travel experience for all our passengers, and this new feature is just one of the many steps we are taking towards achieving that goal,” the airline added.
The airline operates 2,000 flights daily and is the largest low-cost carrier in India.
