The annual rating which began in 1999, is based on public opinion polling of passengers from over 100 countries around the world, who were asked to rate some 325 airlines. Qatar who had taken first place seven times, lost its top spot this year but as a consolation prize, its business class and Al Mourjan lounge at the Hamed International Airport, were voted best in their class.
Air Asia was named the best low-cost airline, a title it has been awarded each year since 2010. Scoot from Singapore is the best long-distance low-cost airline of the year and Spain's Volotea is the best low-cost airline in Europe, according to Skytrax.
The rating company introduced a new category this year and asked passengers who was the most family-friendly airline. Air Canada, they decided. And who was the cleanest? Well, that honor was given to All Nippon ahead of South Korea's Asiana Airlines and Qatar Airways.
